Karva Chauth, on Kaatak badi chauth, is the most widely kept fast of married women in Haryana. It starts with sargi before dawn — mathri, pheniyan, dry fruit and tea, sent by the mother-in-law — and ends only when the moon is seen through a chhalni (sieve) and arghya is given.
The katha and the karva
In the afternoon women gather, pass the thali seven times in a circle (the pheri) and hear the story of Veeravati. The clay or metal karva is filled with water and exchanged. Moonrise in Haryana is usually between 7:50 and 8:30 pm on the night.
Dates are calculated for Kurukshetra; local panchangs may differ by a day when a tithi spans two sunrises.
