Lohri & Sakrat

North Haryana celebrates Lohri on the night of 13 January with bonfires, rewari, peanuts and the Dulla Bhatti song; a family's first Lohri after a wedding or a birth is a big party. The next day is Sakrat (Makar Sankranti). Across Haryana, the bahu of the house 'manaati hai' — offers a gift to her saas, jethani or other elders, who then bless her. Khichdi with desi ghee, til-gud laddu and gifts of blankets are part of the day.
